Getting around in Curaçao
One of the first things people notice once they hit the road in Curacao is the number of cars in traffic. It soon becomes apparent why. Because for getting around it is best to have a motorized means of transportation. Fortunately there are plenty of practical, trendy, and savvy ways to achieve this. It all depends on your style, your needs, and your budget, on land, over sea, or through air.
A new Public Transportation system is currently in the making. Up to now, a very basic transportation system has been in place, consisting of one main provider with large and middle sized busses, working fixed routes between the city center and some of the larger neighborhoods on the island every hour. These are called ‘konvoi’. Small privately owned vans, called ‘bus’, seating 9 people at a time, also offer their services, generally also going deeper into the neighborhoods, but at a higher price. These however do not run according to a fixed grid or timetable, so should you choose to make use of these, you are best off to wait at any bus stop and just flag one down when they pass. If they have vacant spots, they will usually stop and pick you up.
But the best way to get around our island is definitely by car. The lifestyle and economy are designed with the car in mind. Almost every store, supermarket, restaurant, bar, toko, snèk, or any other establishment for that matter has ample parking space and people easily move from one place to the next by car.
